The Goal of the Gospel
What is the benefit of following Christ? Why in the world do we do it?
We do it because the alternative is Hell. We do it because we want to go to Heaven.
At least that's the way it's normally framed. But it is not the way the Bible portrays it. And it misses the point entirely.
The point of the Christian message is not to get to Heaven, but to God.
The problem of sin is not that it keeps us from Heaven, but from God.
John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believes in him might not perish but have everlasting life."
I always assumed this was talking about having everlasting life in Heaven. But when you take the story of the Bible into account, it’s about a relationship with God. He doesn’t want to save us so we can go to some fancy place and live forever. He wants to save us because He loves us. He wants to be with us. The story of the Bible is a story of God bringing man back to Himself.
This is why He sent His Son. And this is why He requires us to follow Him, because the everlasting life is life with God.
So the question is, how are you living your life?
Are you treating Christianity like a means to Heaven?*
Or are you living like the point of your life is to be with God?
Those are two very different things. And for me, it used to be the first one.
Now, I think it's different. And it's a much better life.
