Don't Assume I'm Stupid
I am of the conviction that many of the world’s ills could be cured by assuming the intelligence of the people with whom you disagree.
What I mean is that we often assume the person who believes differently than us believes that way because they are…
Most often, neither of those are the case. Even if they are wrong, that doesn’t make them stupid or immoral. It makes them wrong.
If we assume stupidity then we will never get to the root of why they believe what they believe. And if we never get there, then we’ll never change their mind.
Also, people don’t respond well when they know you think they’re stupid. (And they always know.)
If we assume immorality then we, again, will never get to the root of why they believe what they believe. Also, when you assume immorality in the other person, what happens in you is pride.
Both assuming stupidity and immorality are conversation stoppers. You’ll never get to the reason why they believe what they believe if you assume there is no good reason.
Do unto others what you would have them do to you. I don’t know about you, but I hate it when people assume I’m stupid or immoral. I’d much rather them honestly listen to what I think, and why I think it.
