Dream Big! Or not.
Dream big! Change the world! Don’t settle for mediocre!
These exclamations, while mostly good, can often be misused.
The reason is that they’re vague. They lack the nuance necessary when talking about a persons calling, vocation, or career. (Whatever you want to call it.)
The problem is that changing the world can mean a lot of different things. Changing the world can mean preaching to millions. But changing the world can also mean preaching to one.
On that note, changing the world can mean preaching. But changing the world can also mean plumbing.
Dreaming big can mean building a company. But it can also mean building a family.
And not settling for mediocre? Sure, but what’s the standard? If the standard is wealth, fame, and the like — then forget it. I think mediocre is perfectly fine.
But if not settling for mediocre means rejecting the apathy that often encroaches on our lives…
If dreaming big simply means doing your best, and living your life with purpose…
If changing the world means bringing God’s kingdom here, in whatever way you can…
Then absolutely. Just don’t forget God doesn’t care about our standards for success.
